Five tips on learning Kathak online effectively

13 October 2022

Here, I’m going to share 5 points on how to do online Kathak classes effectively based on hundreds of hours of classes with students from all around the world.

  1. Set up your workspace before your class: You should have proper devices (Ideally, one with a larger screen such as an iPad or a computer) and a strong WiFi connection for an uninterrupted, productive class. This will prevent delays and ensure that you get the most out of every lesson.

  2. Placement, Placement, Placement: I cannot stress how important placing your device is. You should know where and how to place your iPad/computer so that you can be seen head-to-toe on the screen. Bear in mind that you’re about to have a dance class and the visibility of your full body is important. Also, make sure that there’s enough space for movement. This is crucial for your teacher to be able to correct your posture, and movements and help you level up faster.

  3. Commit to a routine: Barring occasional schedule changes, commit to a fixed class schedule so that you can practice with regularity and rigour. Humans are creatures of habits and routines, and setting aside a fixed slot for your classes will help you prepare for the class. This mental preparation goes a long way in helping you absorb the material, both mentally and physically.

  4. Engage in conversations: Don’t interrupt the flow of the class, but if you need to ask a question or if you haven’t understood something, go right ahead. It’s important to flag areas that require more focus early and often. Understanding when and how you should ask questions will become clearer once you’ve had a few classes. Recite the “Bol Padhant” clearly and loudly so that your teacher can hear your pronunciation. Listen to your teacher minutely. It’s much harder to catch up on things you might have missed after the class, so it’s better to ask while you’re both working together.

  5. Incorporate note-taking into your class routine: Taking notes during an online class is very important. If you learn something new, don’t rely on your memory to retain it. Write it down then and there, or soon after a class ends so that you can revise it at your leisure. Kathak, like any more discipline, requires efficient note-taking.

These are just a few tips on how to maximize your progress and get the most out of your online Kathak classes.
